ANTI SALOON LEAGUE.

SUPERINTENDENT ON TRIAL CHARGE OF EMBEZZLEMENT. A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. July. 20. A sensational case which has long agitated both prohibitionists and anti-prohi-bitionists came to a climax to-day, when the grand jury indicted W. H. Anderson, of New York State, superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League, on charges of grand larceny and forgery. The indictments arose from charges of a former employee of the Anti-Saloon League that Anderson misappropriated largo amounts of the funds of the league. When the charges were first made, Rockefellers, who contributed large?.y -to the league, withdrew much of their support. Anderson has been one of the most vigorous "dry" agitators of the Anti-Saloon League, and played a large part in the campaign which eventually resulted in prohibition.

The withdrawal by the Rockefellers of their financial support from the AntiSaloon League it the beginning of the ysar. caused much comment in the United States. It is popularly supposed that if the. Rockefeller millions had not been behind the Anti-Saloon League prohibition would never hare become law, and it was iv relevation, therefore, when the Rockefellers announced that they would .Contribute no more to the funds, firmly, because the antagonism that exj-its against prohibition jeopardised the successful administration- of their other^jhilanthropies; secondly, because in thr/r opinion Mr. William Anderson wa?/not the man for superintendent of the/ieague, thirdly, because it was a question whether the league had not outlived yi usefulness. Officials of the Public Pwecutoi'*s office in New York investigate the distribution of the Anti Saloon Lyijrue's funds, particularly an item of £/OQO which ;. Mr. - Anderson Bays he sper/ for ; "publicity. '* A.refusal by ; the leajr/e officials to disclose the records of V/s organisation resulted in the issuance '■/{ subpoenas summoning Mr. A/iderso'/ and five, other officials to appear in Cou'o and show cause whv the league should not be classified as political and its CAreer be opened to public inspection.
