ALLEGED BREACH OP AWARD

The Arbitration Court yesterday reserved decision in a, case brought by , the inspector of awards, Mr. J. Hollows, against the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, in which the point involved was payment of extra money for night-shift work. v ""(•'

The inspector asked that the company be fined £10 for allowed breach of the Northern Industrial District Engineers' Award, of December 20, # 1922. For several weeks preceding March 21 last, thfe company employed at Chelsea R. Collings &3 a fitter, and failed to pay him 3s per shift when engaged on. night shift for mora than three consecutive nights. In January the 3s extra per shift was paid to the three men on night shift. Subsequently one main left, and was replaced by Collings, who had not received the additional night-shift pay, though the other two men did. Later, one of. the latter also left, and the man who replaced him had not received the 3s extra. Mr. S. E. Wright admitted the facts on bohalf of. the company, ,but said, there was no such thing as night shift within the meaning of the clause. ~.'.' MILK DELIVERIES. Application was made by the inspector of awards tor an interpretation of the Dairy Employees' Award in respect to the delivery of milk on Sundays, public holidays, and Saturdays. The award of February 28, 1921 stipulating that one delivery only shall be made on those occasions. The proprietors of the London Dairy, Devonport, had employed a worker retailing milk on each day, including Sundays, public holidays, and Saturdays, making two rounds, but on each serving » different set of customers.
