WORK OF, THE COUNCIL.

There was a full attendance of mem- i bers at the meeting of "the Waiteinata County Council yesterday, Captain P. Theet presiding. The engineer, Mr. G. ' Jackson, reported that during the month particular . attention had been given to the maintenance of the county roads, and every possible effort had • been made to keep the metalled roads in good condition, although it had been found imtwssible to attend to many of the clay roads owing to the continued wet wea-' ther. Mr. Jackson recommended the council to make preparations for the maintenance of both clay and metalled roadb during the coming season, and advised the purchase of two motor tractors and two tip trucks to. facilitate this work. The engineer reported that the Minister for Marine had undertaken to reinstate the Wairau Creek footbridge, the cost to bo divided as —Castor Bay Land Co., £135; Waitemata Council, £32; and the Takapuna Borough Council, £20. In regard to the Wairau traffic bridge it was resolved to prepare plans for the erection of a fixed span bridge 20ft. wide, and having a clearance of 15ffc. at high spring tide. A deputation, headed by Mr. J. Paton, waited upon the council to discuss the auestion of erecting nev/ traffic bridges over - the Whan and Taikataka creeks. The deputation informed the council that they had not prepared any data upon the subject, but intimated thafi they were prepared to contribute £25 toward the cost of a report to be compiled by the county engineer. The council resolved to instruct the engineer to _ prepare a detailed report and submit it to the parties interested. A number of tender* which wore received' for the working of the Oakley quarry were referred to the quarry committee for consideration. The following tenders were accepted subiect to usual conditions:—Nos. 1 Mid 2 bridges, Kaukapakapa, W. Gallaugher, £837 10s and £849 respectively. '
