TEACHERS' APPOINTMENTS.

The Auckland Education Board, met yesterday. The chairman, Mr. E. C. Banks, presided, and there were also present Mrs. N. E. Ferner, Messrs. J. D. McKenzie, H. S. W. King, T. U. Wells, A. Burns, J. P. McPhail, B.C. Smith, J. Boddie, W. J. Campbell, J. Patterson, G. Brownlee, and F. A. Snell. The charges for admission of children to the screening of films, submitted by the general manager of the Educational Picture Company, were approved. The director of the division of dental hygiene wrote that the establishment of a dental clinic at Dargaville would receive consideration when further offices were available.

Reporting on the conference between headmasters, school medical officers, and the board's executive, regarding "short days," Mr. A. Burns said the committee was agreeably surprised to find there had been so few "short days." A wise discretion was exercised by headmasters, and there was no cause for alarm. Mr. King said the headmasters present could not speak for other schools. The board decided to request headmasters to furnish a record of "short days" in future returns. The department notified a grant of £50 for improving the Training College library. In order to consider the location of the proposed district high school, the inspector is to meet the committees of the Kaikohe and Ohaeawai Schools.

The Education Department notified that in future technical school pupils who wish to apply for pupil-teachership or probationership will need to sit for the intermediate certificate examination. A senior free place awarded by the principal of the technical school would not be accepted as qualification. The board declined to reopen the matter of the protest against the election of the Mangatarata School Committee. Mr. Boddie was empowered to act in the matter of the appointment of a commissioner for Monavale, Mr. H. W. Giles having declined to act.

The application for the constitution of a school district at Fryer's Road was declined, the roll number of 15 being too low. Similar applications from Kaharoa and Matahura—Waiterimu were- authorised from 1924.

A grant of £100 was approved by the department, in addition to capitation, for the conveyance of children to school at Matakohe, the board being asked to provide a similar sum. The transport arrangements for the children were authorised, the board resolving to ask the department to defray the whole cost. The chairman said the board would indemnify the driver against accident, the cost of insurance against risk being too high.

Own Insurance Proposed. A discussion ensued on a proposal that the board should undertake all its town insurance. The secretary, Mr. E. C. Purdie, said the board could set aside £200 a year for this purpose. The Executive Committee and Mr. Wells were appointed to report. The supervisor of technical instruction was requested to also confer with Mr. G. J. Park, director of the Technical College, and report upon a similar proposal. The board adopted a recommendation by the principal of the Training College that the board deduct from students' monthly allowances the amounts pertaining to the days on which the have been absent wherever the absence has not been authorised, and that no absence be considered authorised for which application had . not been duly made. It was decided .to press the need of the appointment of chief domestic science instructress upon the department, which intimated its approval of the appointments of Miss Lane as domestic science instructress at Taumarunui, and of Miss St. Clair as handwork instructress at the Rotorua Hospital School. Messrs. D. Mackay and W. T. Smith were appointed to the Advisory , Committee of the Thames Technical School. Mr. P. Gallagher, B. Ag., having been appointed to Pukekohe, resigned his position as instructor in agriculture, and the board recorded its thanks for his past services. •' ■;•' e ;.; The solicitors intimated that the transfer of the site for the Matamata Technical High School had been, completed.
