SCOW'S NARROW ESCAPE.

ADRIFT FOR 25 MILEB.

JUDDER DAMAGED IN "STORM

The scow Lena is reported to have had a narrow escape from serious ■ damage during the recent stormy weather. She was anchored at the Great Barrier on Saturday with a cargo of firewood on board. At the height of the gale, the Lena began to drag her anchor,, and, as the situation was unsafe, the 1 ' captain decided to seek shelter in Maori Bay. When the staysail was set, to head, the vessel in that direction, it blew away, and afterwards a sea damaged the rudder. This left tho Lena " helpless,' and she drifted steadily to leeward. It is understood that some of the cargo was jettisoned to lighten the vessel. She drifted about .25 miles, and eventually brought up in Omaha Bay, north of Kawau Island, at 5 a.m. on Sunday. It is fortunate that the Lena escaped being blown ashore on the rocky coast in the vicinity." ' ' " .'.'■':>
