NEW TYPE OF CABLE.

SPEEDIER TRAFFIC PROMISED.

TESTS BY PACIFIC BOARD.

A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, May 10. Mr. John Milward, manager of the Pacific Cable Board, says that the duplication of tho cable from. Canada to Fiji is suspended pending testa of a new cable, which is calculated to increase considerably the speed of transmission of messages, and bring about a reduction in rates. If the tests be successful all cable companies recognise that the new cable will) bring about a revolution in submarine telegraphy. Mr. Milward added that while he admitted that wireless would play an important part in connection with strategic purposes, it was not feared com* mercially in the near future. In any case, if commercial wireless developed the cable concerns hoped, by ultimate reduction in rates, to compete successfully against it. The steamer Stephen will shortly arrive from London with material for two new cables for the Pacific Cable Board, one for the South port-Sydney line, the other for the Suva-Auckland section. As tho routes have already been surveyed the work of laying the cables will be started shortly after the vessel's arrival. Mr. Milward states that the new typo of cable is expected to increase the carrying capacity at lea*st eight times compared with what is possible at present.
