AVONDALE BEAUTIFYING.

ACTIVITIES OF SOCIETY.

Much encouragement was given to the committee of the Avondale Beautifying Society on Wednesday evening, when, in response to an appeal that more interest should be taken in the work of the society, a well-attended meeting was held 1 in the public school. Mr. H. A. Darrow presided. The objects of the society were briefly outlined, and it was shown that the burden of trying to make Avondale more beautiful had fallen on too few shoulders. It was emphasised that much of the work done was spoiled by straying cattle and horses. It appeared to be almost imperative that the garden plots should be fenced. It was resolved to give the present system of open beds a further trial, and to request the Borough Council to co-operate in the matter. Plans for the laying out of the j present plots were approved. In regard to the proposal to beautify the triangle in front of the Presbyterian Church, on which a start on a small scale was made last season, it was decided to consult the church managers. The same course is to be taken with the area opposite the Brown Street Methodist Church. Overtures are also to be made ; to the manager of the Church of Christ property at the junction of Great North and Station Roads, with a view to joint action. Other portions of Avondale were mentioned as lending themselves to beautifying, and it was generally agreed that the society will embrace every opportunity to extend its scheme so soon as funds are available.
