" CURING " THE INCURABLE. \
MONEY ON FALSE PRETENCE.
RECOMMENDATION OF JURY.
FBI TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. In the Supreme Court to-day, Alfred Lewis was sentenced to be detained for reformative treatment for a term not exceeding 12 months for obtaining £33 from Mrs., Flora Hill, -whom he guaranteed to cure of her deafness. v Mr. Justice Adams said (he must consider the prisoner's offence in the light of its effect on the public generally. The jury had found that a woman suffering from incurable deafness was guaranteed a perfect cure and that the prisoner had taken her money. His Honor said he felt somewhat embarrassed on account of tho evident undesirableness of sentencing a . man like the ■ prisoner to imprisonment -with hard labour because of the possible effect on him. It was a question between probation and reformative treatment. He would commit the prisoner for reformative treatment.", The Prison Board then would use its discretion as to how long the prisoner should serve, and would decide whether or not he should be licensed and let out on probation: A term of detention not exceeding 12 months -would be sufficient. In returning the verdict in this case, the foreman of the jury added —"And at : the same time the jury wish to express " the opinion that the authorities should take immediate steps, or should have legislation passed to find out the qualifications of masseurs, chiropractors, and others." , ... : :■ "'
