£300 FOR ONE SHELLING. SUMMER CARNIVAL ART UNION. The first gold" found in New South Wales was d : scovered by an English university man named Hargreaves,- not far from Gulgong, and the place which is severely "pot-holed " to-day is called after the discoverer. The largest nugget ever found in the Mother State was discovered by fossicking partners, Bevers and Hefferman, at Hillend. The " nugget ", was a flat sheet of gold standing between two rocks, it was taller than either of the partners. Beyers later owned most of Hillend and became an M.P., but he died in poverty. It will be easier to discover alluvial gold in Auckland's Carnival Art Union which is bound to be successful. The lucky "digger" who puts in a ticket and pulls out £300 need not envy Beyers (who is dead); the investor who finds £100 will be better off than Hefferman (who is also deceased) ; and the speculator who is handed £50 will be much bettor off than Hargreaveß, who departed this life so long ago. .
