CULLING BEER HERDS.
INCREASING SEVERITY.
INTERESTS OF FARMERS.
[BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Friday. Authority has been given by the Minister for Internal Affairs for the culling of red deer in the Southland acclimatisation district from March 22 to December 31, 1923. The period of the permit is much longer than that usually granted, and foreshadows a general severity in culling operations by acclimatisation societies, who are realising that unless the deer are kept in check the protection will be removed in the interests of the farming community. In any case, most of the herds would be improved by a severe culling. In recent years in the Wairarapa district thousands have been shot out of season on certain pastoral lands when they had become a nuisance.
