LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS.

COUNCILS AND BOARDS.

PROBABLE CITY CANDIDATES

SOME RETIREMENTS ANNOUNCED. Some activity is now commencing to be shown in connection with the local bodies' elections to be held in Auckland, as elsewhere in the Dominion, on April 26. Already the names of several intending candidates for .the City Council, Harbour Board, and Hospital Board have been announced, while it is also known that in some instances members of one or the other of these bodies have decided to retire at the end of their present term. Four members of the City Council have definitely decided not to seek re-election. They are: Mrs. E. H. Maguire and Messrs. W. J. Holdsworth, G. Davis, and M. J. Savage, M.P. It is understood, the remaining 17 members will offer themselves for re-election. The Citizens' Committee is now considering the position with a view to bringing out a full ticket of 21 candidates. Several prominent business men who assisted in public work during the war period are said to have signified their intention of standing. At an early date the committee will be able to announce the names of those candidates it recommends for the consideration of voters. In addition, there will be a Labour ticket comprising the following 12 candidates:— Messrs. T. Bloodworth, A. S. Richards, O. Mcßrine, J. Purtell, B. Martin, W. S. Moxsom, C. A. Watts, R. F. Baxter, B. Clews, E. Phelan, P. H. Hickey, and J. H. Mortensen. , Mr. G. R. Hutchinson has intimated that, for business reasons, he will not seek re-election to the Harbour Board, of which he has been a member for 11 years, He will, however, seek re-election to the City Council. Mr. E. W. Inder will be probably seeking election to the Harbour Board. The following Labour candidates are to be nominated for the Hospital Board:— Mrs. E. Rowlatt, Mrs. E. W. Moore, and Messrs. O. Mcßrine, C. A. Watts, and R. F., Barter. Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P., will not seek re-election to the board. The Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. A. Hadfield, has decided not to stand for re-elec-tion to that office next month. Two members of the Borough Council, Messrs. A. Bartlett and E. C. Walton, have definitely decided to contest the Mayoralty. It is*stated that at least another candidate will be standing. Messrs. T. Smith, R. Taylor, A. Turner, F. W. McCowan, and P. H. Hayward have decided not to stand for the council for a further term, but there is a prospect of the remaining two members, Messrs. A. Hadfield and L. R. L. Moller, again coming forward. Under the most favourable conditions, therefore, there will not be more than three of the present members on the new council, including the Mayor.
