OBITUARY.

MR. Q. W. MURRAY.

WELL-KNOWN EDUCATIONIST

A well-known and highly-respected resident of Auckland, Mr. George Wil. Ham Murray, died suddenly yesterday at his residence, Manoa, Omahu Road, Remuera. The news of Mr. Murray's death came as a great shock to a wide' circle of friends, as ho had attended the meeting of the Auckland Education Board earlier in the day. After the meeting he went home and complained of feeling unwell, and about 6.30 p.nL, while sitting in a chair, he collapsed and expired, death being due to heart failure. Mr. Murray, who was 78 years of age, was born in Dumbartonshire, Scotland. In 1863, he came to New Zealand, and afterwards decided to enter the teaching profession. For over 30 years ho wai headmaster at the Kaukapakapa School, and had been looked upon as "father" of the whole district. He later game to Auckland, where he had the first charge of the model country school established in connection with the Normal School. He left the employ of the Education Board with one of the longest records of service of any teacher. Mr. Murray had taken a very keen interest In educational matters since his retard:' ment, and at the time of his death wis a member of the Auckland Education Board, the University College Council, and the Grammar Schools Board. He was also chairman of the board of managers of the Elam School of Art.' He was noted for his sympathy with all students and teachers, and wf.s always willing to assist them. At one time Mr. Murray was a member of the City Council. vHe leaves a widow and one daughter. The interment will take place at Kaukapakapa to-morrow. , * ''
