DEATH IN POLICE CELL.

FATE OF A PRISONER.

FARMER FROM WAIKATO.

An occupant of a cell at the city police station, Arthur Simmonds, aged 51, was found dead at 4.30 yesterday morning in his cell. He had apparently strangled! himijolf with a body belt. Deceased was found to be helplessly drunk in EUecslie the previous day, and when arrested had £122 and a gold watch and chain in his possession. He was lodged for the night in a padded cell and was visited every half-hour in view of his condition. Deceased had been fanning at Te Kauwhata, near M*rcer. An inquest, which was opened yesterday before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., was adjourned until Friday.
