GUILTY OF THEFT OF BAG.

ONE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT.

The theft of a bag containing a quantity of clothing and toilet effects to the value of £5 "was denied by Alfred Philip Cullum, aged 23 (Mr. A. Moody), before Mr. J, W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. In evidence on Friday, the owner of the bag, John Guilford, stated that it had been removed from the railway station. Two railway employees deposed that they saw complainant on the platform with accused following behind, carrying the bag. Accused denied being near the station at all, and said he was with a friend at the time mentioned. The case was therefore adjourned till yesterday to obtain the evidence of the friend. It was reported yesterday that accused, in company with a constable, had visited the residence of the man in question, but he was absent. Two other witnesses, however, testified to accused being in a restaurant on the afternoon in question. The magistrate refused to accept the plea of mistaken identity and sentenced accused to one month's imprisonment.

MISCELLANEOUS CHARGES. A charge of having attempted to leave New Zealand without the written permit of a magistrate was preferred against Alexander Murray Hutton, aged 35, who was subject to a maintenance order for the support of his wife. It, was stated by the police that a. warrant had been issued against him in Wanganui in October last, but had only been served on accused in Auckland the night before. Accused was remanded to appear at Wanganui in a week's time, bail being allowed in one surety of £50. Frederick Langham- Percy Peacock, aged 36, was fined £2, in' default 48 hours' imprisonment, for disorderly conduct while drunk in Queen Street on Monday.
