THE COURT'S LENIENCY.

BREACHES OF ALIENS ACT.

YOUNG FRENCHMAN DISCHARGED.

A handsome-featured young man, formerly a sailor on the French cruiser Jules Michelet, appeared before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday on four charges under the Aliens Registration Act, 1917, and 1920. Accused was Auguste Pagnon, aged 21, who was charged with having landed in New Zealand without a permit, landed without making the oath of allegiance, failed to register as an alien, and having deserted on January 22 from the Jules Michelet. On the application of Senior-Sergeant Rawle, the first and last charges were withdrawn. It was stated that the French Consul was not desirous of taking further action, and it was admitted by the police that accused had had no reasonable opportunity of registering himself, having been in hospital for some time. The magistrate took a generous view of the case and dismissed the remaining charges. Through an interpreter, he intimated that he was treating accused generously, and trusted the young Frenchman would bear this country some gratitude during his sojourn here.
