ENGINEER'S SUICIDE.

SHOT IN A RIFLE RANGE.

A verdict of suicide by shootinz was returned the coroner, Mr. J. W. Poynreturned by the coroner, Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M.. at the inquest yesterday re- ' garding the death of Alfred Jules Ferdinand Smith, aped 27. fourth engineer on the steamer Hauraki. The evidence showed that deceased visited the rifle range in W. H. Hazard's Queen Street shop on Monday morning and fired 12 shots at the running figures and two at the stationary target. As the attendant turned to mark the score a third shot -was heard, and the attendant wheeled round in time to catch the man in his arms. Medical evidence showed that the muzzle of the rifle must have been held close to deceased's head, and the indications pointed to suicide.
