• ■ —■ ENORMOUS LOAD OF DEBT. £470,000,000 FOR PENSIONS. A. and N.Z. LONDON. March 9. Mr. Stanley Baldwin, Chancellor or the Exchequer, in a Parliamentary paper, states that the United Kingdom's total war pension expenditure from August, 1914. to March 31, 1923, will amount to £470,000,000, with an estimated capital liability thereafter of £832,000,000. Votes for mandated territories from April, 1919, to March, 1923, totalled £153,000,000. Other expenditure resulting from participation isi the war includes:—Unemployment, £400,000,000; housing, £225,000 000; liquidation of railway and canal agreements, £203,000,000 : Ministries of Munition and Shipping; £36.500,000; coalmine deficiencies, £48.000,000 ; bread subsidy, £100,000,000; relief work loans, £33,000,000: occupation of Constantinople, £20,000,000. DEBTS OF DOMINIONS. OVER £1,000,000 REPAID. A. and N.Z. LONDON, March 9. The Parliamentary paper presented by the Chancellor of the Exchequer shows that British Dominions during the current financial year to December 31 repaid debts totalling £1,189,985, including Australia £525,877, New Zealand £141,169.
