TAURANGA DISTRICT.

The necessary proclamation regarding the acquisition of a large area of native land by the Taurang.i Harbour Board at Matakana Island, opposite Mount Maunganui, has been gazetted, and the matter of assessment of claims will be duly brought before the Native Land Court. The board is now making arrangements for fencing the property and the planting of trees on an area of about 20 acres of this land.
During the past imonth. the Public Works Department has paid the Tauranga County Council £2219 in connection with improvements to roads in various parts cf the county. Several large contracts have just been let by the council for metalling various parte of the main road between Tauranga and Te Puke, and in the vicinity of Pnengaroa junction. The Tauranga County Council has accorded its support to the following resolution adopted by the Tourist League : "That the Minister for Public Works be naked to obtain authorisation for the early construction of a railway line to connect the east coast with the railway at Tanrang?., this being a work of Dominion impoitance in the development of the Bay of Plenty and its hinterland." At the last meeting of the Omokoroa branch of the Farmers' Union a resolution requesting the Tauranga Hospital Board to establish an emergency hospital in the district was ' unaaimously carried. Heavy crops i'f lucerne and meadow hay continue to be harvested, the weather of the past* few weeks having been very favourable for hai vesting operations. In some instances a fifth crop of lucerne has been cut this season, and one or two more '' cuts" are assured off these stands. The maize crops throughout fhe district are very promising ana good yields are expected. A petition is to be presented to the Governor-General praying that Tauranga County be constituted an electric power district. The proposed outer areas are Tauranga Borough and Te Puke town district.
