THE CHURCHILL MEMOIRS.

Sir, May I be allowed to correct a slight inaccuracy in " The Churchill Memoirs" appearing in Friday's Herald. Regarding the visit of the Sehamhorst and Gneisenau tp Samoa, on September 14, 1914, Mr. Churchill says that when •' informed of the fate of 'their colony, the German cruisers put to sea, after firing a few shells at the Government establishments." Fortunately for the New Zealand garrison, a. considerable portion of which was exposed, most invitingly to the enemy behind defences (; that were pitiable to behold, the German ! ships moved off without firing a single shot. Those of us on the beach, wh<o were mere spectators, were more than thankful that the crack shots of the German Navy were not provoked to do at i Apia what they did at Papeete a few i days after. The New Zealand lads were | prepared far the worst, and the only ; " growls" one heard were that they had had no breakfast! But what if' those " few shells" had been fired ? Fa'amaont.
