HENDERSON SHOW.
FRUIT MAINTAINS QUALITY. NUMEROUS EXHIBITS. AWARDS IN CHIEF CLASSES. The Autumn Show of the Henderson Fruit and Horticultural Society, was held on Saturday in the Public Hall, Henderson. So numerous were the exhibits that two large marquees had to be brought into requisition in addition. There, was a crowded attendance. In most of the classes there were larger displays than at the previous show, but in vegetables there was a decided falling off. In the classes devoted to fruit, the reputation which this 'district is justly proud of was well maintained. A feature of the show was the large number of entries in cases of fruit, packed and graded ready for market. In this section the judges had some difficulty in placing the winners, so excellent was the display generally. In one particular, however, 'it is evident the local fruitgrowers still have something to learn, for while the packing was an improvement on that of last year, there was a want of evenness— some packed too tight, others too slack—either would be a draw;back if a similar practice were followed for export. It was a subject of remark on all lianas that notwithstanding the particularly bad season for peaches, earlier in the year, the late varieties shown at this show could scarcely be excelled anywhere, colour and texture being much better than last year s exhibit. Quite a large display, too, was made of bottled fruit, and this section was particularly tine, coming in for congratulatory remarks on all hands. A 'matter worthy of consideration for the future is the advisability of holding the show of fruits in Auckland instead of in the 'district in which ttiey are grown, so that more of the outside public may see the possibilities o c . the district as a commercial orchard centre for the growing of stone, pip, and citrous fruits, Ihe secretarial duties were in the capable hands of Mr. G. A. Green. Following are the awards in the principal classes:— FLOWERS. Six Sunflowers: Miss M. Knight. 1: Miss Duncan. 2. Three Fuchsias distinct vaneties: Mrs. W. Stevens, 1.
