OPPOSITION WITHDRAWN.

THAMES HARBOUR SCHEME.

MORRINSVILLE CONVERSION.

MORBINSVILLE. Tuesday,

[by telegraph. —own CO]

Representatives of the Thames Harbour Board, together with Messrs. D. Donalson, Mayor of Waihi, and E. N. Miller, Mayor of Thames, waited on the Morrinsvillo Borough Council to put before it the merits of the proposed Thames harbour scheme. There were also present Messrs. Bell and W. McLean, representing the Piako County Council. Each speaker on behalf of the Harbour Board emphasised that other things being eqnsl there would be a considerable saving in freights by goods coming from Thames to Morrinsville instead of from Auckland. It was stated "that the borough's contribution for interest and sinking fund on the £60.000 loan would only be £27 per year. The speakers stated that at present, with very small facilities at the Thames, the present surplus revenue was sufficient to meet half the total interest and sinking fund of the' proposed loan. Tho experience of other harbour boards indicated that with improved port facilities, the revenue would be correspondingly increased and would be sufficient to cover all interest and sinking fund charges. After several questions had been replied to the council carried the following resolutions:—That as far as the Morrinsville Borough Council is concerned, no organised opposition will be directed against the h?rbour scheme. That the council will eive tho representatives of the Harbour Board every facility to explain the scheme to the ratepayers of Morrinsville. That the council commend the i arguments used by the Harbour Board representatives to the serious consideration of the ratepayers. As the Morrinsville Borough Council has expended nearly £70 in fightincr the scheme tho adoption of these resolutions means a complete change of front.
