ROMAN CATHOLIC MISSION.
ADDRESSES IN CATHEDRAL. A two weeks' mission, conducted by Fathers McCarthy and Eccleton, of the Marist Mission staff, was opened on Sunday at St. Patrick's Cathedral. There were large* congregations morning and evening. Last evening Father Eccleton— a forcible and convincing preacher—took as his subject "The Malice of Sin," and trenchantly denounced the vices of modern life. This week is devoted by the missioners to reflections on the great eternal truths, such as death, judgment, hell, eternity, while next week the principal doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church will be explained, such as the real presence, the confessional, marriage, the sacrifice of the mass. In the mornings Holy Mass is celebrated at 6, 7, and 9 o'clock, when nearly the whole congregation, upwards of 500 at present, receive Holy Communion. An appeal was addressed by the director of the mission, Father McCarthy, to all non-Catholics to attend the mission. He assured them that no word would be spoken to offend ( the religious convictions of any. "For," he added, "religious convictions are the most sacred things in life."
