WAXING OF BETA CETI.
POSSIBILITY OF MISTAKE. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. March 5. Mr. Gale, president of the New South Wales branch of the Astronomical Association, referring to the cabled report of a sudden increase in brilliance of tne star Beta Ceti, says that after observations on Saturday night he found the star quito normal. By mistake on the other side of the world Beta was probably confused with Mars, which is in an adjoining constellation. The , Government Astronomer, Mr. Cooke, concurs in this view. DR. ADAMS' COMMENT. AN IMPROBABLE MISTAKE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON Mor.doj" Commenting on the above cablegram, the Government Astronomer, Dr. C. E. Adams, said:—."Of course the confusing of the star Beta Ceti with Mars is an absurd thing to do if it has been done. No astronomer would do it. It would be an excusable mistake for an amateur, but no astronomer who knew his work would make such a mistake. All we know is that when wo got on to the star Beta Ceti we could note nothing out of iho normal about it."
