GROUND IMPROVEMENT FAIR.

INTER-SCHOOL SPORTS.

A most successful fair was hold at Meodowbank School, Waiatarua. Road, Remuera, on Saturday to raise funds for the improvement of the playground There was a very 'arge attendance cf children and adults, the chief attraction for ihe former being an extensive programme of sports, while in addition there were many side shows and gaily-arranged Btalla. Mr A. J. Entrican, president of the Grounds Improvement Committee, wno presided at the opening ceremony, mentioned that Msadowbank School, instead of being controlled by the Remuera Schools Committee, -was to have a district of its own. ...,,» In formally opening the fair the Mayor, Mr. J. H "Gunson, emphasised the importance of improving the grounds from the children's poirt of . view. Th ?' idea of the fair originated with the children, and all contented deserved hearty congratulations upon the outcome. The first sod in connection with the improvement scheme was turned by Sir George Elliot, patron of the committee. The work contemplated is of an extensive nature, levelling and excavation for the formation of a cricket and football ground being the first task. During the day several inter-school contests were held. A relay race, in distances of 100 yds., 220 yds., 500 yds., and £40yd«., was won by the Meadow! ank team, comprising V. Mace, M. Rhodes, W. Mace, and D. Menzies. The school •will thus hold the McAlpine challenge shield for a year. Remuera, which was defeated in this competition, made amends by carrying off the Pafccoe steeplechase ciip, for which there were two crosscountry races. The senior event was won by G. E. Caldcr, Meadow bank, F. Jeeves, Meadowbank, being second, and in the junior race Thompson, Remuera, came firsthand B. Wright, Meadowbnnk, was second. The trophy went to the school having most leprostntativcs among the first' six boys to finish. The David Silk cup for tug-of-war was won by the Meadowbank team, which defeated Remuera in two straight pulls. Mr. E. E. Wigg was chairman of the energetic committee in charge of the arrangements, and Mr. P. D. Wright was secretary. An enthusiastic band of ladies worked hard to ensure the success of the gathering. ■. . .
