SATURDAY'S CRICKET.

AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.

MODERATE TEAM SCORES.

A CENTURY, IN FOURTH GRADE. ,|

The club championship matches under the auspices of the Auckland Cricket Association were resumed on Satui-u!i.y in fine weather. The wickets were in excellent order, with fast outfield, yielding full value for every stroke. There was nothing specially attractive in the cricket which, following ' on the M.C.C. match, might have been expected to bo something better than the ordinary club standard. Conditions v/vte favourable, notwithstanding a strong breeze blowing throughout the 'afternoon. One outstanding batting performance was a 104 not out innings of Bentley in the fourth grade match, Onehunga v. Windmills. Two matches were played at Eden Park, but the games did not attract much public interest, the spectators present being the ardent supporters of the contesting teams. The match between University and Grafton was played on No. 1 • wicket. University had first strike, but made a poor stand, the side being dismissed for 99, of which total Kelly, with 36 not out, was the highest scorer. W. Garrard was next with 22. The feature of the match was not so much the indifferent batting of University, as the good bowling of Alcott, who, assisted by the breeze, took seven wickets for 44 runs, a good performance. Horspool accounted for the other three. In the second innings University lost two wickets for 11. In the first innings Grafton easily surpassed the University total, but even their score, 145 runs, was a. comparatively poor performance on a wicket that could not be claimed to favour the bowlers. Peterson was the principal scorer, with a wellcompiled 47; Horspool was next with a useful 20. The bowling honours were divided, R. Garrard securing the best figures— for 32, Graham taking three for 34. The match between Parnell and Eden was commenced at Eden Park. Parnell won the toss and batted on a good fast wicket. The run getting was slow at the commencement of the innings. Parnell, however, made a good start, scoring 72 runs for the loss of two wickets. With three exceptions the scoring was considerably good, and the side was not disposed of until it had compiled a first innings total of 231. Three wickets was the best Eden performance, Mills securing these for -51 runs. The match between Ponsonby and North Shore was played at Devonport. Ponsonby won the toss and took first strike on a good wicket. The team made a fair start, scoring 75 runs for the loss of two wickets. The opening batsmen scored well, but the side sagged at the centre, to make a recovery at the eighth and. ninth wickets, the team totalling 233 at the finish, the highest score of the day. Grant played a useful innings for 40, Snedden 30, and Brinsden 29,' these being the principal contributors. There was the astonishing score by "Extras" of 34. Scott, with five wickets for 41 runs, was the most successful bowler for North Shore, whose first inningjs realised only 34 runs for six wickets. Smith secured five out of the six wickets, one falling to Snedden, the Ponsonby captain. . The results of the senior matches were : —

R.V.—ln the match between Y.M.C.A. and R.V., which was concluded on the Domain on Saturday, Y.M.C.A put up a fine performance by gaining two points from their opponents. R.V., who have not suffered a defeat for two years, had scored the good total of 237 on the previous Saturday. The Y.M.C.A. batsmen rose to the occasion, and on a good wicket the veterans. Christian and Cullimore, put on 130 for the second wicket, giving their side a good start. Christian was first to leave, after giving one of his old-time displays of alhround-the-wicket cricket. His 79 was made without a mistake, and he had hard luck in not reaching the century. Cullimore continued on to see Ward make 22 and Robertshaw one, and then was caught for an invaluable 69. compiled with great patience. The necessary runs were hit off by Miller and Cox, the former getting 106 and the latter 88. They treated the tired bowlers with httle respect. Cox especially hitting very bp.rd. haying six sixes in his 88. This is Miller s first century since coming to Auckland. Y.M C.A.'s total was 370 for seven wickets.
