Sir, —"Pomdor's" letter on the above subject appears to be to the point, as ; there is undoubtedly a great discrepancy 1 between the abundance of fruit produced , by the local growers, the low price they ' get for the same, and the comparatively . high- price at which it is retailed to the i public. The remedy appears to be a sim- ! £le one; at any rate, it is worth a trial. ! ret the growers combine, establish one ■ or more shops in Auckland and retail their own fruit at what they consider a reasonable price. Fruitarian. Sir,"Pomdor" says the retailer of apples was getting 8d per lb. for Gravenstems. I have been selling apples for a j great many years and have experience as I to grades. I have sold this season this I apple, first grade, for 5s per case all over j Auckland. I know others who have done ! the same. I have sold at 51b. a shilling ! for the last six weeks, and the public do ! not rush the cart" at that price. I am not an advocate for Orientals, but they are ■ the thorn in the side of the retailer. They j pay more for their fruit than the white , man, with about three exceptions. I have often wondered how they can pay j the prices they do. In the last 20 years : I have only known two retailers able to retire, and that was not all from fruit business. Touching on gluts, of course the public get tlje benefit. I can assure you that more homes have, got a case of apples in stock at the present time than has been the case for the last nine months.
