INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP. ELECTION' OF OFFICERS. ; The annual meeting of "the Auckland District Law, Society was held yesterday, the president, ; Mr.J. Alexander, occupying the chair. '- Appreciative reference to the late Dr. , H. Dean Bamford and; Mr. W. Thome was made by the council in its annual report. The report stated that a large increase ! in the number-of practitioners was again ' shown, certificates having been' issued to 168 barristers and 417 solicitors. The figures for the previous year were. 149 and 365. j! The number of solicitors actually practising in the district at the end of the year was <fj9. In connection with the postponement until: April 1, of this year, of the coming into operation of the Stamps Duties' Act, 1922,; consideration ; had apparently at last been given to the I protests \so frequently raised .by the » society against the practice, of bringing J statutes into force without due and proper r warning. ' It *8 to be hoped that in ; future? con.. .deration would also be given \ to the protests made against the insertion in statutes which ' dealt generally with one subject of a section or sections dealing with another subject in no way related. The year's revenue amounted to £2796. including practising fees, :. £1463, and admissipn fees £1071. The balance of net revenue carried to capital account was °.1556. The assets of the society were £13,345, including mortgages, £3900; main library, £4672; Maigstrate's Court library £987 judges' library £612; and libraries in various country centres. The election of officers resulted ; in the re-election of all last year's officers as i fo'lows: —President, (Mr. J. Alexander; vice-president, Mr. A. H. Johnstone; hon. treasurer, Mr. F. L- G.
