SOUTH AFRICAN TEST.
ENGLISHMEN 'MAKE STAND. 294 FOR FIVE WICKETS. RUSSELL SCOEES 96. By Telegraph—Press —Copyjigbt. A. and N.Z. CAPETOWN. Feb. 12. Play in the fourth test match to-day was delayed by rain. The attendance numbered 10,000. • Bad light threatened to interrupt the game at several stages, though it brightened later. The Englishmen continued their second innings, and had lost five wickets for 294 runs when stumps were drawn for the day. On opening the batsmen settled down to determined batting, and soon had the measure of Nurpen and Blanckenberg, who persevered with the leg theory. Russell, 96, batted aggressively, and there was general regret at his not reaching the century. A sudden collapse after tea was attributed to Memoes' influence on the new ball. Woolley's effort, 80 not out, was bright and entertaining, in contrast with the solid batting of Mann. Meintjes jus tified his inclusion, securing three wickets for 38 tuns, and brilliantly catching Mead. Following are the scores: — M.C.C. |
