MENACED BY BLACKS.
WHITE WOMAN MISSIONARY ALONE ON NORTHERN ISLAND. HELP SENT FROM DARWIN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 10.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. BRISBANE, Feb. 13. Advices from Darwin state that a message has been received from Miss Matthews, a missionary, who is the only white person on Goulburn Island, off the coast of the Northern Territory, asking for assistance, as she is threatened by hostile natives. ' The message, which took five days in transit, was received last Thursday, but the authorities refused to send help until authorised from Melbourne. To-day a launch with an armed party was despatched. It will take four days to reach the island. : Goulburn Island lies off a desolate portion of the coast of the Northern Territory. It is several hundred miles to the east of Port Darwin.
