GERMAN STFAM-PR AWARDED SALVAGE.

With the mark covering, around 8000 to the dollar, German shipowners lucky enough to salvage a vessel in distress are in a position to enrich themselves • almost beyond the dreams of avarice in their own native currency. A striking illustration _of the fabulous profits to be made in bringing a disabled vessel to safety was afforded • last month when the British Admiralty Court awarded the Hamburg-American liner Fuerst Buelow the sum of £ 4200 for towing to a safe haven the Greek steamer Antonips Stathatos. which broke her rudder shaft ,in mid-Atlantic durintr bad weather last Mav. At the rate of exchange prevailing on the day the Court rendered its decision the sum awarded amounted to 147,000.000 marks, or more than the Hamburg-American Line's entire pre-war capital. This recalls the case of a steamer which arrived at Hamburg and had to make a deposit of 20 per cent, in connection with a general average claim, says an Eastern exchange. This denosit was paid in marks which were immediately exchanged into sterling and sent to London. The final statement of the claim has just been compiled, and a return has to be made, but owing to the fall in the value of the mark, those who made the denosit in Hamburg received a balance which, in marks, considerably exceeds the amount of the original deposit.
