FIREMEN'S COMPETITIONS.
NEWMARKET BRIGADE.
The Newmarket ,-■ Volunteer, Fire Brigade held its annual competitions in . the borough reserve on Saturday. Keen interest was taken in the events. The Mayor, Mr; S. Donaldson, Messrs. W. T. Sawbridgo, and G. E. Smerdon, representing the Borough Council, and Captain Williams, of the Mount Eden Fire Brigade, rendered assistance to the competitors as officials. . - ' The one-man sealed handicap tor the Leek Shield and a gold medal presented by Mr. F. Odium was won by the secretary, H. E. Watts, by the narrow mar* gin of two-fifths of a second. The winner put up the fastest time on the day, 62 2-ss„ plus 3s penalty; less 6s handicap; net, 59 2-ss. Messenger Rose, witfi 14s handicap, finished in 59 4-ss. . There were 12 competitors. The two-men: wet event was won by the team comprising L. Randell and D. Randall in 32a, an excellent run. F McCarthy and H. Watts were 'second with 36 1-ss. Six teams competed. The three-men event was won by R. Carter. G. Rose and H. Watts in 26 l-fis i L. 'Randell, F. McCarthy, and C. R. South' second, in 27 l-55.: The visitors were entertained to afternoon tea by the brigade ; and spent an 1 enjoyable tune.
