MODERN HEATING METHODS

. ADVANCE IN GAS FIRES. Referring to modern ,; methods of heat ing at the annual meeting of the Auckland Gas Company yesterday, the chairman, Mr. J. H. Upton, said the engineer of the Electric Power Board, 'Mr. A. Wyllie, intimated that > his department would not be able to supply current for radiators during the coming winter. He hod also stated that " it was certain they would never be able.to undertake the heating of Auckland in winter." The above remarks apply whether the supply of electricity be from coal or from water. The coal consumed for • electrical heating is far greater than that required for direct steam or hot air system of heating. -.'..'.. " Mr. Wyllie might have added," said the , chairman, "or for the not altogether unknown method of heating by gas, for it is a fact that the advance in the design of gas fires in recent years is so great that they are now to a large extent displacing "all other means of heating. ," Exhaustive tests have been made showing that the present application of radiant ' heat • in modern gas firesiis as nearly perfect as possible from' a hygienic point of view. In a rapidly-growing city like Auckland many thousands of pounds could be saved 'in building costs by the adoption of radiant gas fires with built-in flues, saving ' the high cost of the erection of brick chimneys."- ■ •'■■'■.;•; :>■£;/
