THREE SHOPS DESTROYED.

A- fire broke out in a block of buildings on the Great South -Road at Ngaruawahia at one o'clock on Sunday morning. ; The origin' of the outbreak was in a shop occupied by W. Newman, a fruiterer. The fire spread to Miller's restaurant, and destroyed' this and an adjoining building occupied by D. C. Joe, a fruiterer, 'who, with his wife, had just, arrived from China. ; The latter's stock was not insured, but a portion was saved through the efforts of volunteers . The water supply, which is being : installed in the town, had recently been laid ! past the scene of the fire, which enabled the volunteers to save Gibb and Co.'s motor garage.
