FIRE AT NGARUAWAHIA.
THREE SHOPS DESTROYED.
VOLUNTEERS' GOOD WORK. - [BY TELEGRAPH. correspondent.] „ NGARUAWAHIA. Monday. A- fire broke out in a block of buildings on the Great South -Road at Ngaruawahia at one o'clock on Sunday morning. ; The origin' of the outbreak was in a shop occupied by W. Newman, a fruiterer. The fire spread to Miller's restaurant, and destroyed' this and an adjoining building occupied by D. C. Joe, a fruiterer, 'who, with his wife, had just, arrived from China. ; The latter's stock was not insured, but a portion was saved through the efforts of volunteers . The water supply, which is being : installed in the town, had recently been laid ! past the scene of the fire, which enabled the volunteers to save Gibb and Co.'s motor garage. The Oddfellows' Hall also had, a narrow escape. , , • • » The insurances total £1100. Joe's shop is: owned by Mr. W. J. A fir* , this morning destroyed the grocery and confectionery store in MacLaggan Street of E. G. Jones, \ the stock being a total loss. It was insured for £500. . SHED AT ALBANY DESTROYED.
MINOR OUTBREAKS IN CITY.
■ A fire which resulted in the destruction of: a: large shed owned by Mr. John Brown occurred at Albany ■. yesterday■:■ morning. The outbreak originated in a loft for storing feed and .toolsj ; and was first seen .by Mrs. : Brown, who succeeded in removing a large quantity of tools. By the efforts ;i of neighbours . another '; shed was saved. The. cause of the fire is not known, but it is thought' that ; probably somebody slept in the shed the previous night. , ->f : .■:■'.'■■ •; i}\ : v<i'vv'{':..■/;';:;<' ] :\-y A short circuit •in an electric advertising device ; caused a minor outbreak ,of fire shortly after, noon yesterday in .portion of the ■ Kapai: Corn Broom\Company's building in Kitchener Street, occupied by the Electric Advertising Company. The fire brigade was summoned by telephone /. and the outbreak --< was' quickly extinguished. ; An electric advertising instrument was slightly damaged. -' Flames and smoke issuing from the pavement at the top i of Sliortlandl Street attracted a crowd about .: 5.30 .yesterday afternoon. : The ' cause was ; th« .catching alight of an underground cable. The outbreak was speedily extinguished by three' members of the City Fir© Brigade. "
