RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

DARGAVILLE CLUB'S MEETING SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. ■ LOYAL IRISH WINS THE CUP. The Dargaville .'Racing Club's ":■. meeting, which formed a section in,the combine entered into tins"' season by -the one-day country clubs operating in the- Auckland district, was held at Ellei'slie on Saturn . day, and with the weather in keeping' with summer, an attendance estimated at. : over 11,000 assembled to assist at the gathering on the A.R.C. ground. Residents of" Dargaville and of . surrounding districts in :':tKo : Northern Wairoa were present in strong' force. ■'.;'■; The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister J fop Public Works is patron of theDargaville Racing' Club), and the 5 * Hon. G. J. Anderson/ Minister for Labour/ were numbered among those present. : With Mr. W. S. Spenco directing matters 'in the management of the meeting, every thing -worked with ''that complete smoothness characteristic of Ellerslie, :" and with the racing. furnishing many interesting contests, the : gathering from first to last was most enjoyable. Tho only matter necessitating a summoning 'of the Judicial Committee arose in connection with -the' -running of the Ruawai Handicap, in which there was a bit of crowding near- the winning post; L. Manspn, who rode the-1 winner, Winning Lass, was reprimanded for careless riding. _ Mr. A. W. Gordon -was - the stipendiary steward present: Totalisator Investments. _'.'..' Only a comparatively short interval marking the close of the summer carnival, extending over seven days, considerable curiosity was evinced as to the shape the totalisator figures would take. Speculation on the machine was characterised with much spirit throughout, and. when the figur.es came to be totalled at the end of the dav it was found that £50,617. had been invested on the eighty events which formed the programme, which was some £10,000 in advance- of what .might ■■be termed the popular estimate. The sum put through the totalisator at the annual meeting hold last year at Dargaville amounted to £8273. . •, The opening event of "the programme— the Horehoro Hurdle brought out a field of 11, and when backers got to work they quickly made Miss Melya lav-' ourite, with Reretoa second choice. Rere-toa-went into the lead at the end of five furlongs, and, jumping cleverly, he won his race easily from Miss 'Melva: Orahga, who was challenging Reretoa strongly at the last fence, when racing- level with his rival, blundered badly and fell, and the mishap to the Royal Soult gelding sapped the race; of much interest. . ... Winning Lass Effects Surprise. .• ; When the starters' names went up for the Ruawai Handicap it was found that a strong field of 32, was to contest the six furlongs ; race. Though Dancing Doll ■ had disappointed on several previous occasions, the highly-bred , English mare counted sufficient admirers, to place; her in the position of favourite., Of the others, Malatour and *Llanelly were' most fancied. The favourite division were, however, to suffer a complete rout.j Winning Lass, who went out to win her race at an early stage, survived all -challenges, and, amid much excitement, won by three-parts of a .length from, a brace of dead-heaters in the shape of Utakura 'and Nocturne. .Winning Lass, who is owned by Mr. H. Kirtibcr, of Dargaville, was one of the greatest outsiders, and it. may be inferred that the dividend which followed her victory was of a very solid character.- - Winning Lass was trained by her owner, who, there is reason to believe, participated to a, good extent in the dividend paid over the victory gained by the .'daughter;•.•pi Kilwinning. ■"' ■ ■'■'.■■ • ;'■'- - ■".■ '• '. '■;'.':• ' : In a field of 11 produced to contest the Hobson Handicap, "Finelli was chief, choice with backers, Golden Dream and Namutere being next in . email . When the barrier shot, up Finelli; was quickly into her stride, and she flattered the hopes of lier admirers by leading up to , the half-distance, . where Royal .Blood challenged, andj thei black geldingv simply played with his three-ycar-oid stable mate in the concluding stage. It wa? an attractive performance * for-; which Royal Blood was responsible. . The Finlayson Handicap, which was confined to the two-year-old division, attracted a field of' 11, Maria, White Comet, and Sleepy Sol being the chief fancies. The first-named was- prominent to the head of! the straight, but she faded away in the run to the post. \ Sleepy Sol was always found galloping strongly, : and he Won his race in good style, Archibald filling the role of runner-up. "• ; The Dargaville Cupi.. • Ruapapi, Pino Arch, and Glen Canny were withdrawn from the Dargaville Gup, which left a field of a dozen., to contest the leading event of the programme. Refinement was niade , favourite, the; other contestants beinjt; backed in the following order: Royal •' Present, Broadwood, Ropmerday, Perfect . TJayi Infante, Royal Abbey, Loyal Irish, Nightraider, Stork, Marble 'Glass, Sir Otway. At the end oS half ,a furlong Broadwood held' a slight advantage of a' fairly ; bunched field; and with Loyal Irish always well• up, -they came : into the straight ; on close terms. Broadwood still had the best of it at the distance, but Loyal Irish 'wore him down in the concluding stage, won by half n; length. Refinement seemed to meet some trouble I about;,::; the - six ./'furlongsj post, land half a mile from home (ihe was still badly placed., The favourite finished ! gamely, : and was just beaten, by Boomerday for third place. , • ;';■'■■ In a field of eight saddled up -to contest the Awakino Stakes, the Australianbred gelding. Cool' Stimulants, was made favourite, ' with Amiform '■: and Emerald Hill best supported of ;tho others.. r Bute Sound and Cool Stimulants, who were the pace-makers, carried the field along at a good bat, > and tha . latter locked like a winner inside the distance, but Ami form's, concluding run proved too .','• powerful for the Australian : gelding, and ; the - Formative .gelding scored attractively. :•"'"' Narrow Neck Romps Home. '' Thirteen went, to - the. post ■■'.: for , the Tangihua Handicap, for which the three-year-old Flying Planet was made a warm favourite, Te : Akitai and Elsie Aroha being the other contestants ; most strongly supported. ' The winner, however, turned up; in Narrow Neck, whowas always found racing well,/ and who eventually romped home an easy winner six lengths in front of ; Te. Akitai. '■;-.■■:; Teh horses went to the post for ; the Northern Wairoa , Welter. Handicap, , for which Bitholia was the /popular : fancy, with Archie, Gold Jacket, and '. Pentagram standing out as the others most strongly backed. The • favourite was disputing matters with the, pace-maker, Peter Maxwell, in the run: across the top :-,stretch, but he failed to stay it out. Peter Maxwell also went out of the picture, and the J upshot of an exciting finish^'.was. a head .•victory for Pentagram,' Gold; Plane' and Archie, close up, next, a ,-• »;■■■-;. ■•'„ ; Details of the Racing.* ' HOREHOBE HURDLE / RACE ; of ■ £150;' second £35. third £15; over seven flights of : hurdles.; 1J- miles. • '. -~-•■.. .
