ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES.
TO WORK OTIRA TUNNEL. FIRST ENGINE ASSEMBLED. [by TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHUKCH. Friday. The first of tho electric engines for the Otira , tunnel has been completely assembled at the Addirigton railway workshops. A second engine is nearly completed, while a third had its body listed on its base to-day. Two other engines have yet to be assembled when the component part * arrive from England. i' All parts were made at the works of the English Electric Co., Ltd., at Preston, and the first engine took only four and a-half days to assemble. Those who are familiar with the "tube " trains in london and Paris will know the type of eugine required for electric railways. In outward appearance they are of similar outline to -the carriages and they pi i -.ess none of the fa» iliar outward humps and funnels of the ordinary steam engine. There is a difference in mechanism iii these New Zealand engines, however, to those in use on English electrified lines. . The engines for the work at Otifa are designed to have a speed of 15 miles an hour uphill for goods trains, 17 £ miles an hour uphill for passenger trains. The downhill rate for passenger trains will be 25 miles-an hour, and these will haul a load of 140 tons.
