NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. Mr. A. Hill, course manager for the A.K.C., has been granted permission by the committee, upon the application of the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club, to visit Christchurch and confer with Mr. Luttrell, the architect engaaed on the construction of the new metropolitan trotting course, upon the lay-out and appointments. This is a distinct compliment to Mr. Hill, who has already tendered similar service to various clubs in the south by permission of the A.R.C. committee, and, moreover, shows a commendable sporting spirit on the part of the A.R.C. committee. At the conclusion of tho A.R.C. Summer Meeting the Gisbome-trained hurdler, Whanoko. was left behind at E'lerslie in W. Tozer's hands, and it is understood that he is to remain horo until after the Takapuna, meeting.

Tresor was brought across to Ellorslie from Avondale in the middlo of tho week, and has been working, on tho local track under tae guidance of his owner. /' Canyon and Opiate wore brought from the South during tho week, and have joinod J. Williamson's stable. The former is a five-yoar-old maro by Wolawa, from tho Cyrcnian marc- Wairakau, and is fairly smart over short courses, although she has only performed nioderatoly in her most recent engagements. Opiate is a six-year-old gelding ty All Black, from Dreamer, and won "over hurdles at North Otago last winter.

Usually a very free galloper on tho training track, Royal Present did not bit out v. ith his accustomed dash while galloping on Tuesday morning, and Bitholia gavo him a sound beating over seven furlongs, a fact which was very disconcerting to many of Lis . admirers. However, Royal Present shaped much better on Thursday, and going splendidly at the end of his task, demonstrated in ft pointed manner that there was nothing amiss with him. After her forward showing in the Derby and tho highly-satisfactory nature of her track work during the past week, Refinement will hftvo a strong following in the Dargavill© Cup to-day. with such an experienced horseman as A. Reed in tho saddle, and with the handy impost which she is called upon to carry, Refinement may bo expected to play a part in the settlement of tho event. • Several seasons back the Potoa gelding Ruatara was regarded as a very promising horse, and changed hands at a price round about four figures, but he failed to do the big things expected of him. and was subsequently passed on to Mr. H. W. Brown, in whose interests he raced for some time and won a few races, but after a number Of disappointments, he is reported to have been sold recently for 25 guineas. The crowd of two-year-olds engaged in the Fjnlayson Handicap at Ellorslie to-day cannot bo classed very highly, and goes ta show what a poor class of juveniles we have in Auckland this season. Of the 13 acceptors, only one of them —White Comet—can Iny "claim to having Won a race, and his fuccess waa achieved in. a three horse race at lamilton. , The resolute manner in which Amiform shaped in the concluding furlong of the Glasgow Handicap at tho A.R.C. Summer Meeting, in which lace ho secured third place, will not bo readily forgotten by followers of the sport, and it would occasion no surprise to nseiim elected to the position of favourite for the Awakino Stakes to-day. No fault can be found with Amiform's condition and provided that he gallops up to his best, ho should keep his opponents vory busy. Bute Sound is to face the starter to- < day for the first time since meeting with ! th'.it unfortunate mirim-v v:M"h ■-"' Mm i into retirement at the Te Aroha meeting last year. Tho son of Potoa has been striding along fairly well in his training, and should derive a lot Of benefit from the race Miss Melva, who heads the list in the Horehore Hurdle Race, shaped sufficiently well in her engagements at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting as to suggest thnt she will have something to say in the settlement of that event, and ie almost sure to go out favourite. With 9.0 in the saddle she filled third place to Never Despair and Snake in the New Year Hurdle Race. Without registering anything, of a. startling nature, Archie has acquitted himself in good style in his efforts on the track during the week, and should givn a good account of himself to-day, as he will doubtlessly find his task of a less exacting character than was tho case in tho Auckland Cup and Auckland Racing Club Handicap, in which events ho was outside of a place. It is reported that Sid Reid, who is still in charge of Cold Steel and the Kilbroney —Sunbird colt, owned by Mr. B. L. Joll. is likely to leave for Australia shortly with sortie horses owned, by Mr. W. G. Stead. Whether this can bo taken to mean that Mr. Stead intends to resume racing again is for the future to reveal, but it would certainly be pleasing to followors of the snort to see the popular yellow Jacket and black cap in evidence again at an early date. After the race for the Hack Flying Handicap at the Pohiatua meeting R. 8. Bagby, the rider of L'Amour, who filled the rolo of runner up, entered ft protest against A. Oliver, the rider of the winner, Bonlbrook, . for interference at the entrance to the straight, but it was dismissed owing to insufficient evidence. A horse whose track doings of the past week have attracted much notice is Bitholia, who is engaged, in the Northern Wairoa Welter to-day, with an impost of 31b. abov© tho minimum. On many occasions this gelding has shown good form on the track, only to disappoint in his races. However, he will be racing over a distance which will suit him to a ninety and should he give of his best will make matters very merry for his opponents. Cool, Stimulants is accorded ft good opportunity of distinguishing himself in the Awakino Stakes to-day. as tho finld opposed to him ie neither strong in numbers nor in quality. On tho score of condition, ha lacks nothing, and he promises to bo one of the favourite selections for the race. Mr. J. A. Black is to be sympathised with in losing such a promising hurdler as Night Time, who had to be doßtroyed as a resu}t Of tho severe injuries which he sustained when he fell at the second to last fenco in the Auckland Hurdle Race. Bright Gift, who caught a cold just bofore the A.R.C. Summer Meeting, and waa consequently unrtblo to fulfil his engagements at that fixture is almost recovered and is to resume work again at an early date. Prior to being taken back to the South, Killashandra was hitting out pleasingly 'in hip work, and was responsible for a nice effort over six furlongs on the outside of the course proper at Ellerslie on Tuesday morning. Killashandra is engaged at the Wellington Summer Meeting. Among the juveniles engaged in the Finlayson Handicap to-day is Sleepy Sol, who went close to resisterinj a surprise in tho Midsummer Handicap on the third day of the Auckland summer meeting, when he was within one and a half lengths of the winner. Bathe*, at the finish. This fellow has Progressed satisfactorily in his training since then, and there is reason to expect that he will show up well in his engagement this afternoon.

On the form which Muria has shown to date, she is evidently more at home over five than over six furlongs, and the distance of the Finlayson Handicap to-day should be to her liking. She will be a much-fancied candidate for this event, and should make a good showing. The apprentice horseman, L. Simpson, is to have the mount on Marble Glass in the Dargaville Cup. S. Anderson, who has ridden Infante in a number of engagements, is pilot that gelding in the Dargaville Cup this afternoon. Poanui, whose recent displays have not been in keeping with his best, is being treated to a spell, Pukehuia pulled up very lame after work-' ing on Thursday morning, and has been thrown out of work. A partnership has been registered in the ownership of Sir Otway as between Messrs. J. D. Jones and A. J. Friedlander. The southern light-weight, E. Garrett,, who rode Hallowroz to victory in ,the Pahiatua Handicap on Wednesday, will be riding, at the Bay of Islands and Dargaville meetings at Ello'rslie. i The three-year-old Sentinella, who claims an engagement at the Bay of Islands meeting on Monday, arrived at Elleralie yesterday afternoon. , It is intended to send Alfort south' to j fulfil his engagements at the Wellington Summer Meeting, and, if present intention* are carried out, he will De entrained tor Trentham on Monday morning. Purple Heather, who, it will be remembered, became affected with throat trouble some little time back, hen got rid of her complaint, and is to bo taken in hand again I at an early date. | The racehorses Hanger Zone and Rock-1 field were shipped to Sydney yesterday by the Marama. An effort is to be made to get Another race out of Woloratvi,. and F. L. Dowduis, private trainer to; Mesars. D. J. and M. J. Lynch, is giving him some light work at his owners' fnrm at Ramaratna. As, a tv.o-ypar-old Wolomai showed very promising form, winning once and running third once out of three Start*, but an unfortunate n fshary sent him into retirement,- *ndh* nn* not raced since. Bv Wolfrwt from Tripoli. Woloniai now ranks as a. five-year-old. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES. Very little fast work was done,at Ellerslie yesterday morning, the majority of the horses i being restricted to pace work.* The No- 3 grass track, which was in the best of order, was available, and all the galloping was done thereon. _ No. 3 Grass. Royal Abbey was the first to go fast, registering 1m 18 2-5s for the concluding six of seven furlongs. _, John Dix reeled off half a mile in 535, Wian Wynne taking 1 2-5s longer to cover the an me journey.
