ENGLISH CRICKETERS.
MATCH AGAINST .OTAGO. SOUTHERNERS OUT FOR 202. SHEPHERD'S FINE INNINGS. [by telegram.—press assocuttcon.] DUNEDIN. Friday. The Otago v. M.C.C. cricket match was commenced to-day on a wicket and outfield which was described by members of the English team as the best yet played on in the Dominion. Otago's innings opened poorly, but Golland and Shepherd made a fine stand, both scoring freely. Sliephcrd gave- several difficult chances which were not accepted, and eventually went out in trying for a big hit off a ball dead on the wicket. Conradi also gave a brilliant display, and was shaping well when he was taken behind the wickets by Mac Lean. The M.C.C. team, on taking the strike, scored at a great rate, and had two wickets down for 51 when stumps were drawn. Otajjo won the toss, and H. C. AHoo and Shepherd went in to face the bowling iof Calthorpe and Freeman. Each bowler sent down a maiden and then H. 0. Alloo scored two off the first ball of Calthorpa's next over, but played the fourth on to his wicket. 2——2.
A. W. Alloo followed, but did not last long, being clean bowled in Calthorpe's fourth over. 12—2—5. McMullan, who filled the vacancy, hit the first four of the match after 30 minutes' play. Ho and Shepherd then livened the play up a little. Both gave difficult chances. Tyldesley took the ball from Freeman, and McMullan's career, though merry, proved short, Tyldesley bowling him off his pads with a* straight ball. 47— — Golland was the next batsman. Shepthorpe was relieved by Chapman. Shepherd and Golland scored freely, the former reaching his half-century in 82 minutes. At 23, Golland pave a chance to Freeman at mid-on. The next ball Shepherd was clean bowled by Tyldesley. 94-4—52. Dickinson filled the vacancy, Calthorpa replacing Chapman. Golland hit two fours in quick succession. The century went up for 93 minutes' play. Golland reached his half-century for 63 minutes' play. Soon after Dickinson was caught in the slips by Wilkinson. 135 —5— Duncam was next. At 58 Golland pave a difficult chance to the bowler which Tyldesloy accepted. ——58. Conradi followed and did not answer a call from Duncan. The latter can and was run out. 148—7— Knight was next man. Conradi scored rapidly but Knight was slow. At 184, Calthorpe took the brfll from -Hartley, but the change was not effective. Freeman relieved Tyldesley, and off his bowling Conradi was caught behind the sticks by Mac Lean. &—39. Conradi's 39 included six fours and w?p compiled in 38 minutes. Mcßeath followed, and was caught off Freeman by Tyldesley at midon. 202—9 Torrance was next and was clean bowled by Freeman. 202— —0.
Wood and Wilkinson opened to McBerrth and Dickinson. Runs came freely to both batsmen, and 30 went up for 20 minutes' play. Wilkinson drove Dickinson to Shepherd at mid-off. 32^—1 Titchmarsh was the next to the crease. At 41 Arthur Alloo took the ball from Dickinson, and his first ball, a full toss, Hill-Wood played on to his wicket. 41— 2—14. McLean was the next man, and he and Titchmarsh played out time.
