GROWING OF LUCERNE.
A VALUABLE FODDER. It is a marvellous thing that in spite of the wonderful results achieved from lucerne growing more of this forage crop is not grown. Mr. J. W. Deem, Government Fields Instructor, is, however, doing his utmost to create more interest among the farmers in the growing of lucerne, and just recently he forcibly impressed upon the . farmers of Southern Hawke's Bay the value of growing lucerne in their district. An instance was given of the results obtained by Mr. J. H. Fatrhurst, of Dannevirke. The patch consists of half an acre, and last year he took five crops of hay off it. This year it was cut on November 20, giving a most excellent crop, and it is now nearly ready to cut again. Cultivation was carried out under the directions supplied by Mr. Deem.
