Three cases of anthrax hare been re- ; ported lately, alleged to be due to the use of shaving brushes imported from the East. SYDNEY CRIME STATISTICS. OYER £145,000. STOLEN LAST YEAR. ■; SYDNEY. Jan. 10. A return issued ,by the Inspector-' General of Police shows that 7888 crimes ■were committed in Sydney during the past .year, and of that number 5586 were , cleared up by the police. The value of property stolen was £145,051, ' and the value accounted for was £143,106. These figures compare favourably with those of previous years. TWO ; DESTRUCTIVE PISES. * \ LOSS AT CAIRNS AND TAREE.; i BRISBANE, Jan. 10. : A fire at Cairns destroyed Bullock's j hardware store, Morton's cafe, the Aus- ) tralian Hall, and the office of the Cairns • Daily Times. SYDNEY, Jan. 10. A fire at Taree, 170 miles north of Sydney, destroyed six shops and two dwelling houses. Heavy damage was done.
