BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. }'""■ the singles competition, high' standard of ""■ play: PRESIDENTS "AT HOME" TO-DAY. The 10(h annual cluuhpiouship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was officially opened at the Carl-. ton green yesterday. The president, Mr. "VV. Coltman, in welcoming the visiting bowler's, said the weather was not on its best behaviour for the opening, but bowlI'i's could bo assured of a pleasant time. The features of the day were the fine showing of several players tinder the tournament conditions, many of the older bowlers having to give place to younger leavers. The greens played surprisingly well considering the heavy showers of the monnig. which delayed the play on the various greens for upwards of an hou.\ In the afternoon the. greens played perfectly, but on exposal greens the wind proved rather troublesome, many a good shot feeing seriously affected. The standard of play was high, and good games vere witnessed. x ' T'-ie committee is strictly enforcing the foot-on-the-inat . rule. - . Several players were cautioned yesterday, and in a number of cases "bowls" were called by the ■umpire. One player, with:* "three shots against him. drew a perfect toucher, only to have the bowl declared "dead." The singles, which are being played under flu- "two-life" system, attracted an entry of 186. They will be continued to-, day. play commencing at nine o'clock on Carlton. Poiisonby and West End greens. -At Carlton green tho players who so far are unbeaten will continue their play, and those with still one "life" will play oil two rounds on the other greens mentioned, the loser of each game dropping out. Players left in after these two rounds will resume play at Carlton at 1-30 p.m. At the end "of the day the number of players loft in will be 'about 20. a few of whom will still have two "lives." The competition will be. returned on Friday, January 19, or at such. time as the players are available. The championship pairs competition, in which. 200 pairs will be engaged, will commence to-morrow at 9 a.m. on the following greensSection A, West End; Section B, Mount Eden; Section C. Dominion Road; Section D, Grey Lynn; Section E, Rerauera; Section F, Epsom,' .Section G. Onehunga: Section H, Rawhiti; Section 1. Devonport; Section J, Mount Albert; Section K, Carlton; Section L, Ponsonby; Section M. Auckland. There ■will be two sub-sections on each green, with the exception of Auckland, Bind section winners will play off to determine the green winnei on Saturday afternoon, if possible. All pairs have five games to : play, three to-mcrrow and two on Saturday. - '•■■ •■; ■ ~ •■•■■• ' The principal attraction of the tournament, the rinks competition, opens on Monday oil the various greens/commencing at 9.15 a.m; In all,' 144' teams take part. Two games of 25 heads will be played each day for four days. On Friday, January 19, post-section play will commence. The arrangements were very complete, and gave extreme satisfaction, particularly the result-board at the Carlton green, the headquarters, where the results of the respective rounds were set out as they were received from the various greens. The work of Mr. A. R. Coltman, secretary of the tournament, is worthy of ' special commendation. S„. : The Governor-General. Lord JeJlfcbe, and Lady Jellicoe will be present at the t'adton green tin's afternoon to attend the president's "At Home."
