MR. P. SELIG'S RETIREMENT.

33 YEARS WITH PRESS COMPANY. [BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCUTION.J CHEISTCHUECH, Tuesday.

-:■;■ Mr. P. Selig, having recently attained his jubilee in the profession of journalism and newspaper work generally,' has decided to retire from the position of manar ger of the Christchurch Press : Ccmpaiiy, in whose service he has been for nearly 33 years. He will relinquish his duties at the end of February. '...;'. . . : At a meeting of directors of the Press Company to-day, Mr. .Selig's resignation was accepted, and a resolution was passed placing record the board's appreciation of Mr. Selig's 33.years' of faithful service to the company! The board also voted Mr. Selig a'very generous retiring allowance. Mr. SOIIS leaves shortly on a trip to Great Britain.

Mr. Selig was the third son of the late Rev. B. A. Selig, of Penzance, Cornwall, and was born at Melbourne, the family removing to Wellington when he' was only seven years of age. He was educated privately, and entered the New Zealand Government Printing Office as a copyholder. Later he joined the staff of the Lyttelton Times, but was compelled subsequently, for health reasons, to,- seek /a milder climate, and settled in Sydney. After a stay of a few years there Mr. Selig, his health recuperated, returned to Christchurch and founded the New Zealand Referee, a sporting paper on the lines of the Field, England. In its tenth year' of publication, tho Referee was purchased by the Christchurclii Press Company, and incorporated in the Weekly Press, Mr. Selig: 'continuing as editor. Later Mr. Selig was promoted to the position of manager, which he has held ever since. . '■-■■■. >:'.•.•',

As a director of the United Press Association of New Zealand, Mr. Selig has had a lengthy has been chairman of the association at different times. He was the first president of the Master Printers' Federation, and is a member of the New Zealand Council of the Empire Press Union. For 13 years Mr. Selig also found time to devote' himself to the one'ttS as duties of chairman of the Newspaper Proprietors* Association of New Zealand, which body has been very active in every phase of newspaper work of benefit to the proprietors.: ■; During the war Mr. Selig was very active in hia efforts concerning'the supply of newsprint for members of the association, which, at his suggestion, has been reorganised on the lines of the Canadian Publishers' Association. .Mr. Selig, having ■?achieved his main desire, recently retired from the chairmanship, but remained a member of the governing council and of some of the committees.

Mr. Selig is widely known in sporting circles, having been chairman of the New Zealand Trotting Association since its formation 23 years ago.
