Bridgeman, refused to postpone the execution of Mffi. .Thompson; The Bishop of Stepney visited her-and conveyed a message from-By waters. , : A ; cruel;hoax was perpetrated,;on.,the woman's family, -who received IKe following telegram purported to be sent by Lord Betheil: {"Am in direct communication with Home Office. Cheer up. Good news, coming. Bethell." Lord Bethell indignantly repudiated the telegram.
Mrs. Thompson is the first woman to be a hanged in ' Britain since, 1907, when Mrs. Wills, alias James, a '■;•■'■ balby farmer," was executed at Cardiff.
