STORM IN AUSTRALIA.
WIND FOLLOWS HEAT.
SEVERAL FIRES STARTED.
DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS.
A heavy gale, following intense heat, swept over New South Wales on December 30, the wind in Sydney reaching a high velocity. A great many scrub and bush fires were started, and suburban fire brigades were kept busy checking the flames. In Sydney Harbour, where a great deal of shipping was concentrated, it was feared that some of the large steamers would drag their anchors, but they weathered the storm.
At Orange a violent dust storm was experienced. One family was at lunch when the roof of a .stable 20yds. away crashed against the wall of the dining room, frightening them severely. Many thousands of cases of fruit were blown off the trees. Verandahs, shops, and dwellings sustained, considerable damage during the height of the storm. Newcastle sweltered in a heat of 99deg. until the gale came. The wind brought numerous bush fires. A motor garage containing a lorry was burned down, and a man had a fearful drive through the flames.
Considerable damage was also done at Bathurst.
