A CREDITABLE RECORD.

EVERY BOY CAN SWIM.

The annual prize-giving ceremony in connection with the Dilworth Institute took place last evening in the school hull', Grent South Road. The chairman of the board, Archdeacon G. Mac Murray, presided over a large attendance of parents and friends of the scholars, including many old boys of the school. in his annual report the headmaster, Mr. Noel Gibson, stated that all the 15 boys in standard VI. this year gained' proficiency certificates. The average age of these boys was 13 years and 5 months, or aix months under the average age of standard VI. for the whole of New Zealand. Mr. Gibson Baid he thought great credit was due to those who had taught the boys during the past four years. After speaking of ths achievements of boys who had left the institute, the headmaster referred to the athletic activities of the school, and said that aftrr the large number of swimming certificates won last year it was satisfactory to know that 13 more boys had qualified for the learners' certificate and 10 this year for the proficiency certificate. For the first time since he came to the institute every boy in the school could Bwim, more or less. Professor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the School Committee, addressed the boys on the advanages they enjoyed at the institute. A Lesson in Stewardship. Bishop Averill, who presented the prizes, spoke to the boys on their duty to the community, and said he was particularly interested in the work of the school, for, to him, the institute was a splendid object-lesson of stewardship, a lesson which we in New Zealand needed to learu more than anything else. The chairman also addressed the boys, referring to the generosity of the donor whose magnificent gift had made the institute possible. During the evening the boys sang choruses and members of the sixth standard pave readings from "Julius Caesar." Master K. G. Brierly contributed a recitation and a clever exhibition of sleight-of-hand was given by Master Eoss. The Prize List. The following is the prize-list:— Divinity.—Standards 6 and 5: W. K. Senior athletic championship: H. A Hefferen. Jumpr championship: G. H. Bias. Ihe medal presented by the old boys of the institute for the champion swimmer of the school was presented to G. C. Seale A number of cups and medals won in athletic- contests were also presented to the winners by the bishop.
