PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

KING'S COLLEGE SPEECH DAY.

THE TWO DEPARTMENTS.

TRIBUTES TO THE STAFF.

The annual " Speech Day" of King's College was eelebratod in the Town Hall concert chamber last evening, when the prizes were presented by the GovernorGeneral. Lord Jellicoe. Mr. V. J. Larner, chairman of the Board of Governors, presided, and the Mayor, Mr. J. 11. Gunson, Professor H. S. Dcttmann, chairman of King's School board, and Mr. A. M. Hume, president of the Old Boys' Association, were seated on the platform. There was a very large attendance. In presenting his report the headmaster, Mr. C. T. Major, made it clear that he dealt only with that section of the school located at Middlemore. A beginning was made there in -May with 257 bovs, of whom 116 were boarders, and the year finished with 244 and 113 respectively. Taking into consideration the move in the middle of the year these numbers, which were quito up to last year's standard, might be considered satisfactory. Unless/ however, there was a substantial increase next year, especially on the boarding side, both staff and boys would bo keenly disappointed. in spite of the upset inseparable from the move the work had reached a higher standard this year than heretofore. Some of the forms had a higher percentage of "boys, both brilliant and hardworking, who were bound to do well in the future.

Referring to tho buildings and grounds at Middlomore, Mr. Major said that although not yet possessed of everything they would like, still, conditions were so far beyond what they had been accustomed to that'they secerned almost ideal. The chairman, in a brief speech, paid a tribute to the staff, saying each member was an expert in his own line. Although King's College and King's School were carried on in different positions, they were in essence one and the same, being simply two departments of tho one institution. A tender had been accepted that day for the memorial chnpel at Middlemore, and work would start immediately after tho holidays. It was hoped the building would bo completed in time for consecration on Anzac Day. Mr. S. Clifton Smith, headmaster of King's School, presented a report upon the work accomplished. He dwelt in particular upon the development of character in a boy's life between the ages of seven and 12. The sum of £3000 had been spent on renovations to the school, which was now up to date. He expressed appreciation of the work of Mrs. Ashton Bruce and Mr. J. E. Fulton.

Pofessor Dettmann made an amusing speech, in which he described in lighter vein the activities of the King's School Board. It commenced without any funds whatever, but the necessary money had been obtained on the good name of King's College, and the faith of Auckland people in the future of the school. In its headmaster King's School had secured a '• goldmine." The following prizes were presented by Lord Jellicoe, who shook hands with each boy :- KINO'S COLLEGE.
