GLOVES AND HOSIERY. SMITH AND CAUGHEY'S DISPLAY. An inspection of the glove and hosiery departments of Messrs. Smith and Caughey is suggested as a solution to theproblem which is already perplexing many Aucklanders—" What shall I get her for Christmas ?" It is entirely safe to say that no better selection of goods of this kind has ever been shown by this firm; after long years of uncertainty and difficulty, a class of goods has once more become procurable which for a long time past has been completely off the market. [n response to a request made yesterday, the bead of the department very courteously brought forward for inspection a truly beautiful assortment of gloves and hosiery. The former included some of the finest gloves in the world, the exquisitely soft Belgian glace kid, made from the flawless skins of animals specially reared for the glove trade. Some beautiful French washing suede and Eng lish doeskin gloves were also shown; thp gauntlet and wristlet strap style prevailed, i-iid included some of the very latest novelties in embroidered effects'. Another beautiful line was that of sports and driving gloves in soft suede with gauntlet trimmings of suedo in contrasting colours. The colours, indeed, are a feature of the new gloves, all the fashionable shades of grey and fawn and pastel being shown in practically every make. The prices are consistently and surprisingly low, when one considers the cost of gloves in late years. This is particularly notable in the, fine suede-finish washing gloves, and in the suede-finish white lisle gloves, which have just been Dpened. Double-tipped silk gloves are also stocked in a great variety of shades. The same reasonable prices and excellence of quality prevail in the hosiery section, which, like the glove department, is situated on the ground floor, perfectly lit, ind most excellently ventilated—important points on a hot summer day! The losiery display includes all the newest styles from the world's leading manufactures, the mock ribs which are n'ow so fashionable, the shadow strips, and lace irop stitch.
