HURTING THE DOMINION.

Sir,—Some months ago a correspondent to the New Zealand Herald from Vancouver drew attention to an article of June 17 in the Canadian Commercial Journal. This is an official publication, and the article was on "Demand tor Wallpaper in New Zealand," by Mr. W. A. Beddoe, Canadian Commissioner in this Dominion. In it he says:—"New Zealand is a countrv of earthquakes; houses are generally built in the bungalow style, and are ofwood covered with scrim." The Auckland Advertising Club communicated with Mr. Beddoe, asking if he had been correctly quoted, but so far no reply has been received bv them. The club feel that this, if correct, was a most unkind report to make, and MrV Beddoe, as a resident of Auckland for a number of years, must know that the main reason why houses were built of wood was because of its plentiful supply and lower cost. " certainly is not a fair statement that NewZealand is a country of earthquakes. In the latest occurrence they were confiiect to a limited area around Taupo, and the rest of the Dominion is only subjected to them at infrequent intervals. Unnecessary damage has already been done to the tourist traffic, particularly of Rotorua. bv the scare telegrams sent overseas. It therefore is somewhat of an unfriendly art for the official representative of a ne : phbouring Dominion wfco has been hospitably received here to mate such a slip. In its efforts to make known the advantages of Auckland and the_ dominion in order that the tourist business mav grow into one of our most prontatno the club asks for the co-operation of alVcit'-zens. G. M. FovvLDS, President, Auckland Advertising Club.
