COUNCIL BY-ELECTION.
MR. FURNESS HEADS POLL.
" -MAJORITY OF OVER 360.
ONLY 5:186 VOTES RECORDED. The by-fllection. held yesterday to fill the vacancy on the City Council created by the death of Mr. H. N. Bagnall, resulted in the return of Mr, C. H. Furness, with a majority of 327 trotes over Mr. A. Thompson, who in turn was 136 votes ahead of the third candidate, Mr. J. J. Sullivan. The results are :— 0. H. Furness *. . . 1,984 A. Thompson * • .«> 1,657 J. J. Sullivan *. ». 1,521 The returns from the 21 polling places were completed by 8.30 p.m., the first being received at the office of the returning officer, Mr. P. E. Notley, Town Hall, at 7.10 p.m. from St. Stephen's School, Parnell. Counting 24 informal votes, the numbei-s polled indicate that only 5186 of the 38,000 persons entitled to vote exercised the franchise, or between 16 and 17 per cent."At the last by-election, on April 28, when two seats hadl to be filled, only 5500 voters went to the poll out of 35,916 who were entitled to do so. The deputy-returning officers at the larger polling placeß yesterday experienced the busiest time between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., many people having postponed voting until they were homeward-bound from the city.
ELECTED TO POWER BOARD
MR. L. JOLL RETURNED. ANOTHER SMALL POLL. The election held yesterday throughout the Auckland Electric Power Board's district to fill ihe vacancy on the board caused by the death of Mr. H. N. Bagnall resulted in the return of Mr. L. Joll, with a majority of 87 votes. The poll was a small one, only 3762 votes being recorded out of a roll of 27,000 electors. The number of votes recorded at'the'first* election cS the board last February was 5000. The result of yesterday's voting was as follows: — L. Jell .. 'i. .. 1,361 , W. H. Murray ~ . . 1,274 F. A Brown .. .. 1,038 Small returns are still to come in from three booths in Manukau County, but as these are not expected to total more than 50 votes in all, they will not affect the result. The official count will be made today. ■ The heaviest voting took place at the Chamber of Commerce, where 677 persons registered their votes; then came the Leys Institute, Ponsonby, with 279 votes, and the Town Hall., with 271 votes.. In the Mount Eden district 423 electors voted. The franchise was limited to those whose names appeared on the ratepayers' rolls. Mr. N. M. Speer was the returning officer.
