CRIMES AMENDMENT.
OFFENCES AGAINST GIRLS. [BX WXEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTED.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. The proviso to that section of the Crimes Act relating to offences against girls is repealed in the Crimes Amendment Bill introduced to the House today. Under the Act as it now stands it is held to be a sufficient defence to charges of the nature mentioned if it is made to appear to the jury that the accused had reasonable cause to believe that Ifho girl wa» of or over tho age of 16 years. The Bill proposes to remove this ground of defence. The timo within which a prosecution for an offence against a girl under the age of 16 may be commenced is extended from six to nine months. , The clause in the principal Act, which motes a person liab'e to two years' imprisonment with bard labour for attempting to commit any crime which is punishable by imprisonment with hard labour for three years or upwards, is extended to include any person Tafco incites or attempts to incite any person to commit any such crime, and the penalty is to be the same as in the event of attempting to commit the crime.
