SOUTHERN MINES TO CLOSE.
NO GUARANTEES FROM MEN. By Teleffraph—Prees Association— Copyright. (Received 11.35 r>.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Oct. 2. The secretary of the Southern Colliery Proprietors' Association states that no t-eply hast been received from the men in connection with the owners' demand for a guarantee that the men will work full time, pending settlement of the dispute regarding the use of electric safety lamps. Consequently the mines will bo closed on Tuesday. The Minister for Minos ia convening a conference of southern owners and the minors on the question of safety lamps. The miners in the northern fields agreed to withdraw the " darg " for one week, pending the hearing of the dispute by the Coal Tribunal.

Speaking at ihe eight hoar dinner, the chairman, Mr. O'Reilly, referred to the seriousness of the industrial situation. He . said that during the past year Labour had been fighting a losing battle all along the line, and the faith of the workers in Parliamentary action had been badly shaken owing to the apathy of xnemberi! of Parliament.
